Nonlinear stability of the continuous self-similar naked singularities for the Einstein-scalar field equations
As part of the Weak Cosmic Censorship (WCC) conjecture, it has long been speculated by physicists that naked singularity solutions to the Einstein equations should not exist. However, the construction of a family of naked singularity spacetimes by Christodoulou for the Einstein-scalar field equations drastically changes the paradigm. Nonetheless, it has been shown that these naked singularity solutions are unstable to some rough perturbations, thus non-generic within this class of rough solutions. In complete contrast, in a recent work with Singh, we show there exists an open set of the initial data leading to naked singularites in a localized Hölder class, therefore falsifying the WCC conjecture for the Einstein-scalar field equation in this function class. Our work showcases that the precise formulation of the WCC conjecture is open to debate.
